112
The 112 emergency number is a European initiative that was established in 1991 across all 28 member states of the European Union, including Switzerland and various other countries. In Spain, the 112 emergency number is a collaboration between different police forces such as the local police (Municipal and Urbana), National Police, Civil Guard, and autonomous police services like Ertzaintza (Basque Country), Policía Canaria (Canary Islands), Policía Foral de Navarra (Navarre), and Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalonia).
In addition to the police, the fire department, various departments, ambulance services, rescue teams, and Civil Protection or Protección Civil can also be reached. All these services cooperate when it comes to emergencies, allowing citizens and tourists within Spain to call 112 for free.
The call centers are managed through the various autonomous regions, resulting in numerous different centers in the regions that collaborate nationally. The 112 services are overseen by the DGPCE (Directorate-General for Civil Protection and Emergencies), which nationally manages guidelines and organization.
